Do we really have to have antivirus software program?

Forgive me if I’m missing some basic point right here, but some thing I really wonder more than is if we really need to have antivirus software program. I mean, irrespective of the name in the operating system, is not there something fundamentally incorrect with it if has got security holes that will allow one to infest your computer in such a way that it becomes unusable?
